WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT IMO STATE UNIVERSITY OWERRI.

(BRIEF HISTORY).

Imo State University, initially has two campuses at Etiti and Aba: which was founded in 1981, by the late Chief Mbakwe’s Administration. Later, The University moved to a permanent site at Uturu Okigwe in 1986.

With the creation of Abia State from the Old Imo State in 1992, Uturu campus became part of Abia State (which is now Abia State University, Uturu). 

Immediately vacating their Physical Facilities ceded to Abia State, Imo State University was reborn at Owerri in 1992. Imo State University Owerri, was nursed at Alvan Ikoku College of Education, later matured here at Lake Nwaebere campus, possessing the physical facilities vacated by the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) as they moved to their permanent site at Ihiagwa.

IMSU has 12 faculties with various departments under it. The faculties are headed by Deans and Faculty Officers. The Departments are headed by the Heads of Departments (HODs) who are under the Dean of the Faculties. The Lecturers, the HOD’s and the Deans make up the Faculty Board. They are all academic members of the University, governed by Academic Staff Union of the University (ASUU). Which are responsible for the curriculum and teaching: they teach, set exams, mark scripts and supervise projects. Imo state University also runs Institute of Continuing Education Programme (ICEP) and Post Graduate Studies (PG: Masters Degree and P.hD.) as approved by NUC on July 30, 2012.

IMO State University, Owerri, has over 20,000 students both is Regular and Per time Programmes. Having Prof. Peter Achunike Akah as the Acting Vice Chancellor.
