IMSU OFF-CAMPUS HOSTELS FUMIGATION SET TO KICK OFF – WHAT IMO STARS SHOULD KNOW

IMSU OFF-CAMPUS HOSTELS FUMIGATION SET TO KICK OFF  – WHAT IMO STARS SHOULD KNOW

In compliance with Federal Government directive, as well as recommendations by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), for the placing of preventive measures against covid-19 before the reopening of universities, Imo State University (IMSU) will be kicking-off fumigation of off-campus hostels tomorrow being Wednesday 19th August, 2020.

Ahead of the fumigation exercise, it is pertinent that every Imo State University student has the following facts of the matter at the back of their minds:

1. That IMSU off-campus hostels fumigation exercises will be spearheaded by Femieral Resources Limited contracted by Imo State Environmental Transformation Commission on behalf of the state government and will be closely monitored by the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Committee/Taskforce on Fumigation.

2. Before now, all off-campus hostels including hostels in Frontgate, Bishop’s Court, Okwu-Uratta, Aladinma, Mbonu Ejike, Works Layout alliances had been served official notices by the state-contracted fumigating firm intimating them of the fumigation exercise as well as its accompanying costs on hostel owners.

3. As against allegation of unconstitutionality and foul play raised by misguided elements in some sections of the media when IMSU off-campus hostels were served their notices, the fumigation exercise is not only legal but constitutional in all entirety and is backed by a law of 2008, and amended in 2019 by the Imo State House of Assembly that stipulates that every hostel in the state must be fumigated quarterly.

4. The cost of the fumigation exercise WILL only be borne by the hostel owners, no student is tasked to make any contribution to that purpose.

5. Measures have also been implemented by the SUG Committee/Taskfoce on fumigation to ensure that the cost of fumigation MUST only be borne by the hostel owners as stipulated by the constitution and not IMSU students. By extension, this means that any effort by hostel owners at increasing the hostel rents to secondarily task students for the cost of fumigation will be strongly resisted.

The Comr. Oguike Arinze Collins (Aristotle)-led SUG will continue to discharge her responsibilities within the ambits of legality, shrouded in transparency and accountability in the general interest of all Imo Stars.
