Breaking news from Owerri have it that there is pandemonium as the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, the Imo state capital, is currently on fire.
It is yet to be ascertained what caused the fire outbreak as at the time of this report was being put together as men of the state fire service and other emergency officials are presently at the scene trying to put out the flames.
The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri is the first state-government built airport but it was later taken over by the Federal Government and handed over to FAAN to manage.
The fire was said to have started around 2:10 pm and lasted for over 50 minutes.
Firemen and airport workers have, however, put out the fire.
The source said: “It was a mysterious fire outbreak. It happened at the arrival department of the airport where the authority was carrying out renovation work.
“It would have caused bigger havoc but for the arrival of men of the fire service.
“It started around 2:10pm and raged for 50 minutes. It damaged equipment and infrastructure but the rescue work assisted in savaging the situation.”
Imo police spokesperson, Orlando Ikeokwu, when contacted, said he had not being officially briefed on the incident.

Oguguo, who was military governor of Imo State from 1990 to 1992 during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida, commissioned and built the airport.
