Polytechnic Teachers Walkout On FG

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, says the government appears to be dodging the passage of the new Polytechnic Act as it failed to attend a rescheduled meeting fixed for January 10, 2019.

ASUP President, Usman Duts, who led his executive members in a walkout on officials of the Ministry of Education on Thursday, said both the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu and The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Sunny Echonu, were reported to be indisposed.

At a briefing, Dutse said ASUP is, however, not against any member participating as ad-hoc staff in the 2019 election.

While the polytechnic lecturers were staging a walkout at the Ministry of Education, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, said it is still holding consultations with its members.

ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union is only trying to ensure the universities are well funded to meet global standards.
