ASUU Still Consulting – Strike Is On
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) , has stated that it is yet to conclude consultations with its members on the possible agreement presented by the Federal Government.
This is barely days after the union and the federal government reached an agreement that attempts to end the ongoing strike.
Speaking on the agreement after the meeting held on January 7, the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, said the accountant general and the ministry of finance have confirmed with evidence that N15.4 billion had been released to cover funding in public universities.
On earned allowances, Mr Ngige said President Buhari has approved N20 billion to be used to offset the outstanding arrears of the 2009 to 2012 audit verified earnings in the universities.
He said the earned allowances will be released to ASUU as soon as the process is completed.
ASUU subsequently stated that the ongoing strike would only be called off or not after the NEC meeting.
However, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja, ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union was still consulting.
Ngige had told the striking workers to take the possible agreement reached back to their members and should get back to Federal Government on Thursday, January 10, for possibly calling off the strike embarked upon since Nov. 4, 2018.
However, the ASUU president has insisted that the strike is still on.
He said, “So, we are still consulting and will be getting back to the Federal Government today.”
